Brian the Bad Movie Guy: Horror DVDs for Tuesday, Sept. 8th
September 08, 2009
by Brian Morton
It's Tuesday September 8th and the month is just flying by, like winged monkeys after Dorothy! And speaking of winged monkeys, why don't we take a look at what's going to be flying off store shelves this week!
First up, for those of you without TVs, Paramount is releasing the collected edition of the slasher TV series, HARPER'S ISLAND. For those of you who missed it...which are most of you...this was a weekly slasher series, where each week you were given a piece of the puzzle and each week someone else died. It was a pretty good series, and now they're put it all together for the most of America that missed it!
Dimension is trying to get us all excited about the new Scream trilogy, by releasing the original SCREAM in a TRIPLE PACK! That's right, it's all three movies in one box, so, if you haven't managed to get out there and grab a copy of any of these movies...here's another chance! And, remember; don't answer the phone after viewing them.
Do all those sound too grown up for you? Well then, 20th Century Fox has something a bit more juvenile for you. Its two movies from the GOOSEBUMPS series. First there's ATTACK OF THE JACK-O-LANTERNS, where two kids out trick or treating run into two people costumed with pumpkin heads. But are they costumed people or aliens with a different agenda? Second, there's THE HEADLESS GHOST, finds two kids spending the night in a haunted house. The house is haunted by a headless 13 year old, and when the two go on a search for his head, things get weirder! These could be a great way to introduce your kids to the world of horror...better than just dropping you 5 year old in front of a copy of Texas Chainsaw...trust me, that's a mistake you don't want to make!
Looking for a bit more bang for your buck? Well then, Universal has something for you today. It's the UNIVERSAL HORROR: CLASSIC MOVIE ARCHIVE, and it's got five movies in one box! You'll get MAN MADE MONSTER from 1941, HORROR ISLAND from 1941, NIGHT MONSTER from 1942, CAPTIVE WILD WOMEN from 1943 and, one of my all time favorites, THE BLACK CAT from 1941. While these aren't the best know Universal horror movies, there's a pretty good selection here!
Did you enjoy CREEPSHOW but are starting to change your movie collection over to Blu-Ray? Well then, Warner Home Video is going to be your friend today, because they're putting the Romero/King classic onto the Blu-Ray format starting today. All the EC Comics tributey goodness is extra clear in higher def!
You say that's not enough Blu-Ray for you? Well, New Line Home Video is putting FREDDY VS. JASON out there for you too! If you never caught these two horror icons in full blown battle, then catching it on Blu-Ray should make it extra scary!
Not to be outdone, Dimension is putting out a HALLOWEEN TRIPLE PACK today. No, it's not the first two Halloween's and the horrific third installment. This features HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MEYERS, HALLOWEEN: H2O and HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION in one box. If you're just getting on board with the Rob Zombie remakes, then this is a good way to catch some of the earlier versions...even if Curse and Resurrection are kind of crappy, you know what they say, bad Halloween is better than no Halloween at all!
So that got you all excited and you really want another triple pack? Well, Dimension anticipated that and they're also putting the HELLRAISER TRIPLE PACK on shelves! This features the latest three in the series, you'll get HELLRAISER: INFERNO, HELLRAISER: BLOODLINE and HELLRAISER: HELLSEEKER. So, if Pinhead is your idea of a great date, then grab this box and let him tear your soul apart!
Code Red is scheduling the NIGHT OF THE DRIBBLER for today. In this horror/comedy, young Stanley is told he's not good enough to play on the high school basketball team. But, when the team starts turning up dead, and the killer is wearing a strange smiling basketball mask, could Stanley be exacting his revenge? Only one way to find out...grab a copy!
Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the video shelf, Dimension does it one more time; it's the MIMIC TRIPLE PACK! That's right, the first three Mimic movies all in one box, just in case you can't get enough of the genetically altered killing bugs...although, I think I've had enough already!
Echo Bridge Home Entertainment is giving us LIVE ANIMALS today. In the country, a sick individual kidnaps people, chains them in his barn and then breaks them through torture and cruelty until he's ready to kill them. These people are treated like farm animals, but some of them are going to try to escape...but they've underestimated the psychotic farmer! If you're already a bit timid about country life, then this should push you completely over the edge!
Warner Home Video is issuing a 'keepcase' edition of THE EXORCIST: THE VERSION YOU'VE NEVER SEEN today. I'm not exactly what a 'keepcase' is, but I'm sure that, if you're an Exorcist fan that you'll want to grab up a copy of this before it's gone. And, if you've never seen The Exorcist, this is a good way to jump into the pea soup pool for the first time!
And, if that's not enough 'keepcase' for you, then Warner Home Video is also putting DEEP BLUE SEA out in the 'keepcase' edition too. So, after a little visit with Linda Blair, you can take some time to check out the genetically engineered intelligent killer sharks too! It's like a 'keepcase' paradise!
Do all those sound a bit too serious for you? And have you always wondered to yourself what might happen if a werewolf was to get married to a normal woman? Well, Anchor Bay has an answer for you with NATURE OF THE BEAST. What happens when you marry someone who grows hair and turns into a monster during the full moon? Well, I'm sure that hilarity will ensue!
Brain Damage Films has been quiet for the past few week, so it seems like time to hear from them, and we do this week with HELL HOUSE: THE BOOK OF SAMIEL. Throughout history, there have been books that contain rituals and incantations to bring forth and banish demons. When a group of people uncover one such book in an abandoned house, they have to call on Earth's last soothsayer to help them banish the demons that the book draws forth. This is why I stick to DVDs, books are nothing but trouble.
GREETINGS from 8 Range Road is the story of Cathy. She's having a party, but when some boys decide to play with a Ouija board, bad things begin to happen and Cathy's party will probably be ruined!
HOT ROD HORROR from Hot Rod Horror Inc. is the story of Jenny and David, who are looking for Jenny's brother, who wandered into the local abandoned junk yard. Who wants to bet the there are some possessed cars out there??
Well, if that's not enough to keep your blood chilled during this beginning of autumn, then I think you may be running a fever! So, let's take two aspirin and agree to meet back, right here next week to see what Dr. Brian has to prescribe then. And, if you can't wait until your next appointment, I'm always doing indie movie rounds over at Rogue Cinema.com and, I'm always self-medicating over at Bad Movie Guy.com. And, I'm always in my comfortable straight jacket right here at FearZone.com!
