DVD Review: GIMME SKELTER
May 15, 2008
by Mario Dominick
GIMME SKELTER (2007 dir Scott Phillips)
Burning Paradise Entertainment DVD
Scott Phillips and Exhilarated Despair Productions, who brought us the Tempe-distributed indie zombie outing THE STINK OF FLESH (2005), return to give us this tale of murder and mayhem in the desert in New Mexico.
Phillip Valentine (Billy Garberina), who's supposedly the son of Charles Manson, bands together with some fellow juvenile delinquents who are out looking for fun. Valentine decides he wants to honor his father's legacy by pulling off the slaughter of the population of 78 people in a small desert town. Meanwhile, Todd (Mark Chavez) runs into some relationship trouble with his girlfriend after she catches him doing it with one of Valentine's female toadies. After getting thrown out of the house, Todd goes off to stay with one of his friends. Soon Valentine's massacre gets underway as his crew begins bumping off unsuspecting townsfolk. As the bodies pile up, Todd soon gets wind of the fact that there's a psycho on the loose and he heads out to find his girlfriend and save her. It turns out that Valentine isn't as competent at pulling off his evil deeds like his father was. His screw-ups cause infighting among the group leading to things not going as smoothly as he hoped.
GIMME SKELTER is a very entertaining Grindhouse-style low budgeter that boasts an awesome cast: Gunnar Hansen, Trent Haaga, Billy Garberina, Mark Chavez, Elske McCain, Kurly Tlapoyawa, Kenneth J. Hall, etc. The film is a must for B-movie fanatics as it delivers in campy humor, bloodshed, hot babes, sex, and T&A. Phillips' THE STINK OF FLESH was enjoyable, but GIMME SKELTER is indeed a step up in the way of actors, look and sound, and special effects. It's overall a very welcomed tribute to the 42nd Street classics of the '70s.
Kurly Tlapoyawa's Burning Paradise Entertainment pulled out all the stops as the DVD of GIMME SKELTER is loaded with a director's commentary, outtakes, stills gallery, trailer, a music video, and various video blogs featuring behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with cast members, Phillips at home discussing the film's progress, rehearsals, and more.
All cheesy movie lovers should add GIMME SKELTER to their must-see list ASAP. It includes all the right elements needed in any good slasher flick and the DVD is loaded with entertaining goodies. Visit www.edpmovies.com for all the info you need on Phillips and Exhilarated Despair Productions and visit Burning Paradise at www.burningparadise.net for ordering info.
