South of the Border: PLAGA ZOMBIE
PLAGA ZOMBIE: TOXIC REVOLUTION FROM ARGENTINA

Back in 1997, a group of 17-year-old friends from the town of Haedo, Argentina, created PLAGA ZOMBIE, a living dead comedy shot for just $187 on an old VHS camera. It turned out to be a revolutionary movie, which (four years later) spawned ZONA MUTANTE, a professional and bigger budget sequel that was picked up by Fangoria Video for its US release. That amazing double DVD edition was full of extras, and included a re-mastered version of Part 1 as an extra on a separate disc.

Now, four years after part two screened at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain and at Fantasia in Canada, Farsa Producciones is preparing the long awaited new sequel to PLAGA ZOMBIE.
So I called PLAGA ZOMBIE co-director and Farsa Producciones CEO Pablo Pares to ask him everything about the new sequel. That's right, you read it here first.

What will Part 3 be about?

The new movie will be called TOXIC REVOLUTION. The story picks up right at the end of Part 2. The three heroes of the trilogy desperately try to escape from the alien invasion that has transformed most humans into zombies. After a UFO tries to abduct them, they separate to try to discover the aliens' plan. As the story unfolds, they'll learn that separated they're only human, but together they can be humanity's last and deadliest weapon!

Do you already have a finished screenplay? What can we expect of it?

The screenplay is being written as we speak; the writing process began four months ago. It's being written by the same creative team as the first two movies, and as it happened with Part 2, this film will be even bigger than that one and the first installment. We're trying to get together a bigger group of artists, who'll dedicate exclusively to special effects, zombies and dismemberments. Our goal is to keep the splatter and funny spirit of the saga alive, and the influence of movies like BAD TASTE, EVIL DEAD 2 and BRAIN DEAD.

Some important characters from the first movie will be returning. Plus we're trying to make the perfect third part to close the trilogy. It's a big responsibility not to disappoint fans of the first two movies. We've talked a lot about the great movie trilogies like BACK OF THE FUTURE of the EVIL DEAD movies: why they work, why they became so important... When we shot the first two movies, we were still learning about the filmmaking craft. Nowadays, we work professionally making video clips and commercials. Our idea is to make a film with all the flavor of the 80's: a lot of gore, lots of heroic dialogue and NO CGI!

Where will you be shooting and what format will you use? The first one was VHS and the second on DV...

It will be shot in our hometown, Haedo, and production will happen during December 2008. We'll shoot on HDV but keeping the full frame image of the two previous movies.

When will it be finished?

It's too early to tell, but I think that, most likely, it would be finished by the end of 2009 or early 2010. We'll try to stay on schedule, but you know how it is when it comes to independent productions.

What do you think about the fact that the PLAGA ZOMBIE movies are known around the world?

Farsa Producciones has existed for 18 years, so far. We're living proof that it's possible to make horror films in Argentina and get them to be seen by a wide audience around the planet. To be able to finish a horror trilogy is something that makes us proud and gives us strength, as it was impossible to think about something like that ten years ago... It's the beginning of a cinematic revolution that will hopefully inspire others to make their own films!
